On 27 August, 20 residents from communities near the airport were offered a unique experience: walk on the renovated runway 07R/25L before it reopened to air traffic!
Renovation work on runway 07R/25L, which began on 12 July, is now complete. Since 28 August, operations have resumed on 25L, Brussels Airport's most frequently used runway for landings.
The last major renovation of runway 07R/25L dates back to 2015. This year, work involved removing the asphalt from an impressive 290,000 m² (approximately 40 football pitches) down to the original concrete dating from 1958.
Four layers of asphalt were then poured over the entire runway, amounting to approximately 90,000 tonnes of material!
The runway lighting and drainage systems were also renewed. Thanks to this extensive renovation, the runway is now ready to accommodate air traffic in optimal conditions for many years to come.
Just before it was put into service on Thursday 28 August, twenty local residents had the privilege of discovering the renovated runway, with expert comments by project manager Stefaan Vanhoutte. The perfect opportunity to fully appreciate the immensity of this runway and get an answer to all their questions.
