Cleaner air for everyone living and working near the airport. That’s what we’re aiming for. Aircraft release ultrafine particles and nitrogen oxides (NOx) while taxiing, taking off, flying and landing. Road traffic around the airport also affects air quality. That’s why the Flanders Environment Agency has been monitoring air quality at and around the airport since 1996. But monitoring alone isn’t enough. We're taking action to cut emissions and make the air cleaner. Want to know how? Discover all our initiatives below.
Brussels Airport Company is already carbon neutral today. We reduce our emissions as much as possible and set off the rest. But we want to do even better. We aim to cut down our company’s own CO₂ emissions to zero. That means tackling our greenhouse gases head-on. With gas-free heating and cooling systems, switching to electric vehicles, and using 100% renewable energy, including energy from our own solar panels. Step by step, we’re moving closer to Net Zero Carbon by 2030.
Before and after every flight, there’s a lot happening on the tarmac. Aircraft are towed into position, luggage and cargo are loaded and unloaded, and planes are refuelled. Of course, all these vehicles and machines produce emissions. That's why we're working with our partners to test new solutions, such as electric and hydrogen-powered equipment. By 2030, we aim to have 80% of our ground handling fleet running on zero-emission alternatives. Better for the environment and for everyone who works here.
Together with skeyes and various airlines, we’re always looking for new landing techniques. Smarter landings mean quieter arrivals and lower emissions.
We increasingly attract quieter, more fuel-efficient aircraft. How? By rewarding airlines. Cleaner aircraft pay less at Brussels Airport, while the least noise-efficient models pay up to 20 times more since 2023. We also take NOx emissions into account. This encourages airlines to choose cleaner, newer planes.
Most of our service vehicles already run on CNG, and since 2019, electric buses take passengers to their plane. Our company car fleet is also being upgraded: by the end of 2025, the fleet will be fully electric.
