A self-driving electric Charlatte is currently being tested at Brucargo. The autonomous tow tractor combines satellite navigation systems and laser sensors to read its surroundings and identify any obstacles, enabling it to navigate in a busy, mixed-traffic environment.
This pilot project allows Brussels Airport to study how autonomous technologies can optimise the transport of cargo trailers between warehouses and aprons to make these operations more efficient, safer and more sustainable, while supporting teams in their daily work.
During this phase of the project, the autonomous tow tractor operates exclusively on four predefined routes, at a maximum speed of 12 km/h. A trained operator remains on board the vehicle to supervise operations and intervene immediately if necessary.
The tests involving the self-driving tow tractor are being carried out as part of the European Stargate programme, in collaboration with WFS Cargo, Charlatte Manutention and Navya Mobility for the software.
The project was presented to the press on 24 August.
