Update Environmental Permit Brussels Airport

Living environment

On Thursday 17 July 2025, the Flemish Council for Permit Disputes has announced that the environmental permit of the airport, issued in March 2024, is annulled for non-compliance with the European rules. This decision has no impact on airport activities, nor on the sustainability ambitions of Brussels Airport.

Contrary to European law

The Council for Permit Disputes has decided that the environmental permit of Brussels Airport violates European law. The permit imposes very strict operating restrictions, including a cap on flight movements and a tightening of the rules on night flights. However, before such strict restrictions can be imposed, the European Balanced Approach procedure must be followed first. This did not happen, which makes the permit invalid.

You can consult the Council’s decision here.

What is the impact on airport activities?

This decision has no impact on the current airport operations or the activities of the airport companies. All flights and activities can continue as planned. The airport will continue to operate under the conditions of the annulled permit.

The Council for Permit Disputes has given the competent Flemish Minister for the Environment until 30 June 2029 to complete the European Balanced Approach procedure and issue an amended permit. Brussels Airport will, of course, take all necessary steps to obtain an amended permit in good time and thus ensure the continuity of operations after 2029 and the further development of our airport in the long term.

Will Brussels Airport continue its sustainability efforts?

Absolutely! Brussels Airport consistently seeks to find the right balance between fulfilling its socio-economic role, providing connectivity, and minimising its environmental impact. The airport will continue to do so and has made sustainability a key pillar of its strategy.

The airport will continue to focus on further lowering the noise impact, reducing tis own carbon emissions and further developing its role as multimodal hub. Moreover, initiatives including the new engine test run site and additional noise barriers will continue as planned.
