Drone sightings above Brussels Airport

Infrastructure

Sightings of drones over airports, military bases and other sensitive infrastructure all over the country dominate the news. Drones have also been spotted above Brussels Airport – a situation that naturally raises questions among our neighbours. To help you better understand, we have put together some questions and answers.

Why are drones prohibited around the airport?

Since the new European regulations on drones came into effect, skeyes – the air navigation services provider – is responsible for authorising drone flights in the airspace around Belgian airports.

Unauthorised drones are strictly prohibited in and around the airport. Aircraft are constantly landing and taking off in this area, and a collision with a drone could have serious safety implications. It is therefore essential to comply with this ban and to remain vigilant. In the vicinity of the airport, drone pilots must request prior flight authorisation from skeyes. Failure to comply with these rules may result in a substantial fine.

Please consult the map.droneguide.be website of skeyes and the Belgian Civil Aviation Authority (FPS Mobility) for information on the restrictions applicable to drone flights and their exact scope.

Who decides to close the airspace?

Drone pilots who wish to fly in the vicinity of an airport must request prior authorisation via DAA (Drones Aerial Activities Service Application), a tool specially developed by SkeyDrone. Thanks to SkeyDrone's Drone Radar application, which is linked to DAA, skeyes can track the flight in real time.

When a suspicious drone is reported, skeyes – the agency that is in charge of air traffic safety in the Belgian airspace – will conduct a safety analysis and, if necessary, temporarily close the airspace.

As the operator of Brussels Airport, we are responsible for airport infrastructure and the operational processes related to take-offs and landings. We are also committed to making the passenger experience at our airport as pleasant and efficient as possible, even in the event of unforeseen circumstances. That is why, when the airspace is temporarily closed, we work with our partners to provide stranded travellers with the necessary comfort, assistance and information.

How does a drone detection system work?

A drone detection system involves installing sensors capable of detecting specific signals emitted by drones. This technology can detect both cooperative drones, whose flight has been pre-approved and which actively share their position, and non-cooperative drones.

For undeclared or non-cooperative flights, detection by high-tech systems, in addition to visual observation by pilots, airport security or air traffic controllers, is the only way to spot them quickly.
