Local primary schools visit Brussels Airport

Initiatives

What goes on behind the scenes at an airport? To give local children the chance to find out for themselves, Brussels Airport organises tailor-made, school visits for pupils in Years 3 and 4 of primary school.

Discovering the airport up close

During the visit, pupils learn in an interactive way how an airport works. They discover what can and cannot be taken on board, how passengers and baggage move through the terminal, and what efforts Brussels Airport makes in the field of sustainability. The children are picked up at school by an electric bus and divided into small groups at the airport.

What’s on the programme?

  • an interactive lesson on how the airport operates;
  • a walk through the terminal, from check-in to security control;
  • the hand luggage game;
  • identifying sustainable initiatives on a large airport map;
  • a bus ride across the tarmac, with stops at an aircraft and the airport fire brigade.

Annual initiative

In 2025, the following schools took part in the programme:

  • VBS Ter Ham (Steenokkerzeel)
  • GBS Piramide (Steenokkerzeel)
  • ZAVO Basis (Zaventem)
  • GBS Tilia (Melsbroek)
  • PB Diegem (Machelen)
  • GO! Basisschool De Vleugel (Zaventem)

The visits are specifically aimed at primary schools from the four surrounding municipalities. This way, every child from the area gets at least one opportunity during primary school to become acquainted with the world of aviation. The programme will be expanded further in 2026, allowing all 22 primary schools in the four surrounding municipalities to participate. The initiative is designed to become a recurring annual programme.
