Brussels Airport aims to achieve Net Zero emissions by 2030. To reach this goal, we are switching from fossil fuels to green electricity wherever possible. For example, ground support equipment is being electrified at an accelerated pace and the airport’s heating installations are replaced by fossil-free solutions. To support the transition to low-carbon alternatives, the electricity grid needs to be strengthened.
That is why you may have noticed groundworks near the Fire Station West and Building 38. These works are part of the StraGrid project, which aims to triple the capacity of the airport’s electricity grid by the end of 2030.
The current phase of the works involves installing cables capable of handling a higher load and laying underground connections using directional drilling to a depth of up to 13 metres. This allows Brussels Airport to meet its Net Zero ambitions while operations continue as normal.
