Security screening
Everyone wants to get through security at Brussels Airport as quickly as possible. By preparing properly, you can make the process much smoother for yourself.
Pack smart
At security screening, we check for any dangerous or prohibited items. The more you pack in your hand luggage, the longer the process may take. To speed things up, place anything you won’t need during your flight in your hold baggage.
Use this checklist to get through security faster:
- Liquids: max. 100 ml per container, all in one transparent 1-litre bag. Place it in the tray. More about hand luggage rules.
- Keep your boarding pass ready and place it in the tray at the belt.
- Take phones, tablets, and laptops (and large batteries) out of your bag and cases. Place them separately, with nothing on top.
- Empty your pockets completely.
- Remove your coat or jumper. Keep regular shoes on unless staff says otherwise. Ankle-high shoes go in the tray.
Walk-Through Metal Detector
During the security check, you’ll walk through a Walk-Through Metal Detector (WTMD), which helps ensure the safety of all passengers. The radiation is minimal and comparable to the natural background radiation we’re exposed to every day. All passengers are required to pass through the WTMD, unless there’s a medical reason not to. In such cases, you can request an alternative screening, provided it falls within the applicable laws and regulations.

Manual screening
If the scanner detects something that needs further inspection, a short manual check will follow. This can involve a pat-down of your entire body, but it's always done with care and respect. Sometimes the security officer will wear gloves or a face mask. Hand sanitiser is also available.
If you can’t go through the scanner, for example, if you use a wheelchair, the screening will be done manually.

Yes. It’s safe for everyone, including if you’re pregnant or have a pacemaker. Prefer not to use it? Ask for a manual check.
Your privacy is fully protected. The scan is automatically analysed by a computer. No images or data are stored.
Tell the staff. That includes prostheses, stomas, or injuries. Need extra time or have an invisible disability? Let them know.
Yes, you may carry your child through. Strollers or car seats go through the conveyor.
Only if you’re wearing boots or thick-soled shoes, which can hide objects.
