Some items are too large, too heavy or too fragile to count as standard hold luggage — think bicycles, skis, double basses, surfboards, wheelchairs or your pet. Here is everything you need to know to check in your oversized luggage smoothly at Brussels Airport.
Oversized luggage
Travelling with a bicycle, skis, a golf bag or a large musical instrument? These items need to be checked in as oversized luggage. Here's where to go and what to keep in mind.
Your luggage is treated as oversized if it is:
larger than 90 × 75 × 45 cm, or
heavier than 23 kg (with a maximum of 32 kg), or
lighter than 0.5 kg.
If you travel with a wheelchair or medical equipment heavier than 32 kg, always inform your airline in advance.
Bicycles, skis, golf bags and large musical instruments must be checked in as oversized luggage. The same applies to surfboards, double basses and any other unusually large or heavy item. Fragile items such as glassware or sensitive equipment are also treated as special luggage.
Check in first at your airline's regular check-in desk. Then take your oversized luggage to the special counter at the back of the departure hall, near check-in rows 2 and 3.
Pack items that can roll or have protruding parts — such as bicycles, golf clubs or musical instruments — in a travel cover or sturdy hard case to avoid damage during transport.
On arrival, collect your oversized luggage at the special counter next to baggage belt 7.
Travelling with animals
Your pet is also considered oversized baggage. Whether your animal travels in the cabin or in the cargo hold depends on its breed and size — and on your airline's policy. Each airline has its own rules for travelling with animals — always check directly with them.
Travelling with a pet takes a bit of preparation. Visit your vet well in advance and make sure all paperwork and equipment are in order before you leave.
Your pet must have a valid EU pet passport and an identification chip. The chip number and date of implantation must be clearly stated on the EU health certificate or EU pet passport.
Your pet must be vaccinated against rabies at least 21 days before departure.
Guide dogs and assistance dogs are welcome on board, but please inform your airline in advance. For some animals, an additional certificate is required. Your vet can give you more information.
In the cabin: as a general rule, only dogs and cats can travel in the cabin. Small dogs or cats may be allowed as hand luggage, depending on the airline. Weight, size and the type of travel carrier all matter. Always check your airline's rules before departure.
In the hold: larger pets travel in the cargo hold in an approved travel crate. First, check in at the airline counter. Then bring your pet to the special drop-off area at the back of the departure hall, between check-in lanes 2 and 3. From there, the airport makes sure your pet is safe and comfortable until it is time to board.
Choose the right crate
Your pet should always travel in a sturdy crate or carrier that is large enough — your animal should be able to stand up and lie down easily inside it. Give your pet a few days to get used to the crate before you travel.
Prepare the crate
Place an absorbent cloth on the bottom of the crate.
Make sure there is good ventilation on three sides.
Add a cloth with a familiar scent to make the crate more comfortable.
You may also attach a water bottle with a drinking spout.
Attach a label to the side of the crate with your pet's name, passport details and any feeding instructions.
