Dakar

At the end of the 19th century, Dakar was a fishing village. Now it’s a city with more than two million inhabitants. The growth began when Dakar became the capital of French West Africa, in 1902. The construction of a railway to Bamako, the capital of Mali, strengthened Dakar's position as a trading centre. The centre of the city is Place de l'Indépendence.
