Bringing a surfboard, bicycle, double bass, or another unusually large or heavy item on your trip? That counts as oversized luggage. Always check with your airline or travel agency first to understand the rules.

Criteria for oversized luggage

Your luggage is considered oversized if it:

  • Is larger than 90 × 75 × 45 cm
  • Weighs more than 23 kg (up to a maximum of 32 kg)
  • Weighs less than 0.5 kg
  • Note: Exact size and weight limits can vary by airline, so always double-check with them.

What else counts as oversized luggage?

  • Rolling items or loose parts: Think of items that can roll or protrude, such as bicycles, golf equipment, or musical instruments. Tip: Use a travel cover to protect them.
  • Fragile items: Such as glassware or sensitive equipment.
  • Pets: Your pet is also considered special baggage. Want to know more? Check our Page Travelling with pets.

Bringing something even larger or heavier, like an engine block or drum kit? In that case, air cargo might be a better option. Ask your airline about the possibilities.
