VAT refunds

Bought something in Belgium? Here's how to get your VAT refund before departure.

You can claim a VAT refund if you meet the following conditions:

  • You live outside the EU and are leaving the EU.
  • You bought the goods in the EU and will take them home within 3 months.
  • The minimum amount per invoice or tax-free form is €125 (incl. VAT). This minimum applies in Belgium.
  • You have a receipt and/or a tax-free form (with proof of purchase).
  • You have the purchased goods with you when you make your declaration.

How to claim your VAT refund in 4 steps

Ask for a tax-free form when paying at the store. Fill it out completely and attach the original receipt. Forgot to ask for the form? You can also use an official invoice to claim your VAT.

At the airport and checking in hold luggage? Visit the customs office in the departure hall before you check in your luggage.

Bring these items with you:

  • Your tax-free form or invoice
  • The goods you purchased
  • Your passport and boarding pass

All set? Customs will give your form a stamp, which you’ll need to claim your VAT refund.

Only travelling with hand luggage?

Go through security screening and passport control first, then visit the nearest customs office with your hand luggage.

Have a connecting flight?

Go to the customs office at the last European airport where you have a connecting flight, and bring your hand luggage with you.
