In order to manage its emissions in a structural way, and guarantee continuous improvement, The Brussels Airport Company in 2010 chose to participate in the Airport Carbon Accreditation Scheme.
The Airport Carbon Accreditation Scheme is an initiative by ACI Europe enabling airports to measure their carbon emissions in a uniform and independent way as well as promote initiatives to reduce their carbon emissions. The Accreditation acknowledges the efforts made in carbon emission management and reduction.
The accreditation scheme contains four levels of award. The first level confirms the determination of the carbon footprint of the airport operator, verified by an independent third party. In a second stage a carbon reduction action plan including long-term targets is drawn up. The third stage comprises the development and implementation, together with other airport partners, of measures to reduce the emission of greenhouse gases. A fourth level awards airports that achieve carbon neutrality.
In September 2010 Brussels Airport became Airport Carbon Accredited on the “Mapping” level. In October of the same year it was carbon accredited on the “Reduction” level after submitting a carbon reduction action plan.
This plan includes clear targets: The Brussels Airport Company is aiming to emit 60% less CO2 by 2012 compared with the average emission in 2007-2008. This will be done mainly by further optimising the Brussels Airport heating plants, reducing electricity consumption and using renewable energy sources (‘green’ energy).
In 2012 we aim to receive ACA level 3. To obtain this level and further reduce CO2 emissions all airport partners will be involved.
