Runway use during the works

Runway 01/19 will be unavailable during most of the works. Consequently, runway use during the renovations will deviate from the preferential runway system (*) at certain times.

The flight paths themselves will not change during the works; work will only impact the frequency with which they are used.

What will change in comparison with the preferential runway system?

Take-offs
According to the preferential runway system (PRS), runway 01/19 is used at four periods of time. As runway 01/19 will not be available during most of the works, a different runway system will be put in place. The table below shows what will change in those four periods of time due to the renovations on runway 01/19.

Landings
At these four times, landing aircraft will use runway 25 Left or 25 Right.

During unfavourable wind conditions
If there is a strong northerly or easterly wind, runway 07 Right or 07 Left will be used for take-offs, as is also the case when no works are being carried out. For landings, runway 07 Left will principally be used during the works. In this case, aircraft will use a flight route over the north of Brussels.

Runway use during the different stages

  • 26 July to 7 August: Southern and central section, zone 1

0119_fase1_en

During this stage of the renovations, the runways 07L/25R and 07R/25L will remain operational. Take-offs will use runway 25R, while incoming flights will land on runways 25 Right and 25 Left. When windy conditions prevent the use of this runway system from being applied, flights will take off from 07 Left and 07 Right, and mostly land on runway 07 Left.

In the nights of 2 to 4 August, works will be carried out on the intersection with runway 07R/25L. For these three nights this runway will not be available and all traffic will use runway 07L/25R.

  • 7 August to 19 August: Southern and central section, intersection with 25 Right and zone 2

0119_fase2_en

The second stage of the works begins on 7 August and will last 12 days. During this stage of the renovations, runway 01/19 will not be in use, and runway 07L/25R will only be partially available. All take-offs will be from runway 25 Right. At this stage, all incoming flights will land on runway 25 Left.

When windy conditions prevent the use of this runway system from being applied, all flights will take off from runway 07 Right, and all incoming flights will land on the shortened runway 07 Left or exceptionally on runway 07 Right.

  • 19 August to 26 August: Southern and central section 24/7, intersection with 25 Right and zone 2 between 10 pm and 6 am

0119_fase3_en

The third stage of the works will take one week and will start on 19 August. During this week, all flights between 6 am and 10 pm will take off from runway 25 Right and land on runways 25 Right or 25 Left. If windy conditions prevent this runway system from being applied, all flights will take off from runways 07 Left and 07 Right, and land mostly on runway 07 Left.

Since in this stage works will be carried out between 10 pm and 6 am on the intersection between 01/19 and 25 Right, the available runway length of runway 07L/25R will be reduced during these hours.

When there is a south-westerly wind, all flights will take off from 25 Right and land on 25 Left. When there is a north-easterly wind, all flights will land on 07 Left (or exceptionally on runway 07 Right) and take off from 07 Right.

  • 26 August to 25 September: Central section, zones 1 and 2

0119_fase4_en

The final stage of the works begins on 26 August and will last until 25 September. During this stage, works will only be carried out at night which means that runway 01/19 will be available during the day.

In the final stage of the works, all flights will take off from runway 25 Right, while incoming flights will land on runways 25 Right and 25 Left.

If windy conditions prevent this runway system from being applied, daytime flights will take off from runway 07 Left, 07 Right, 01 or 19, and night flights from runway 07 Left and 07 Right.

Incoming daytime flights will land on runway 07 Left, 01 or 19; and night flights on runway 07 Left or exceptionally on runway 07 Right.
