Yesterday evening the Belgian Paralympics athletes landed at Brussels Airport where everything was prepared to give them a triumphant welcome.
The Belgian 29-athlete strong delegation won no less than 11 medals for our country: five gold medals, three silver medals and three bronze medals. This made the Rio 2016 Paralympics the most successful games for Belgium since Sidney.
During the honouring ceremony at the airport all medallists were called onto the stage one by one where they were welcomed with a thundering applause by friends and relatives.
The 2016 gold medallists are wheelchair sprint athlete Peter Genyn (100m and 400m), table tennis players Laurens Devos and Florian Van Acker and horsewoman Michèle George (freestyle dressage).
Cyclist Kris Bosmans, wheelchair sprint athlete Marieke Vervoort (400m) and Michèle George (para-dressage) won silver in Rio.
Wheelchair tennis player Joachim Gérard, Marieke Vervoort (100m) and handbike trio Jean-François Deberg, Christophe Hindricq and Jonas Van de Steene won bronze.
Congratulations to all athletes and to the medal winners in particular.
